Due to a recent outbreak of foot and mouth disease in the Eastern Cape, the committee for the Fish River Canoe Marathon 2024 has been forced to cancel the event, due to take place on September 27-28.
This decision was made in co-operation with local farmers and the marathon committee to prioritize the health and safety of the region’s agricultural community. The organising committee’s primary concern is to reduce any risk of any further spread of foot and mouth disease, and to do what we can to protect the livelihoods of those impacted. The bio-security risks posed by holding the event this year are too high, especially for the dairy farmers along the route who are most vulnerable to the disease.
We look forward to hosting on a top-quality Fish River Canoe Marathon once again in 2025.
We appreciate the understanding and support of all participants, sponsors, and the wider community during this challenging time.
