After careful consideration and assessment of the Double Trouble chute, the organising committee have determined that modifications made during the winter dry period have not yielded the desired outcomes in enhancing the obstacle’s safety.
In the interest of prioritising the safety of our valued participants, the Committee has taken the decision to designate Double Trouble chute as a compulsory portage for the duration of the 2023 Fish River Canoe Marathon. This choice has been made after thorough evaluation and deliberation, focusing on providing a safe environment for all athletes.
The modifications made were an earnest effort to rectify previous concerns and improve the chute’s shootability. However, despite our best intentions, we acknowledge that safety must remain our top priority. The decision to enforce a compulsory portage ensures that all participants can navigate the course securely and confidently.
During the 2023 Fish River Canoe Marathon, the official portage for Double Trouble will be clearly marked on the LEFT-Hand side of the river. It is imperative for all paddlers to note that a buoy line will be in place across the weir, guiding them into the designated left-hand portage area.
Furthermore, in the interest of safety and to allow for necessary preparations, Double Trouble chute will be closed during the Thursday tripping day as well. September 2023
