Paddlers from all corners of the world will be united by a unique community project when the Hansa Fish River Canoe Marathon gets under way in the Klein Karoo this weekend as the race seeks to bolster the coffers of the under-pressure Cradock Cancer Care Unit.

\nCoinciding with Cancer month in October, the race has a variety of events organised designed to unite the visitors to the region for the race in the battle against cancer, and raise funds for the Cradock based operation that services a variety of cancer sufferers from the wider community.<\/p>\n

Each paddler is being asked to purchase a hand-made crocheted pink ribbon, and a wristband that they will wear during the race as a show of solidarity and awareness of the ongoing efforts to assist cancer sufferers. Each purchase will enter that paddler into a lucky draw for a brand new Knysna Racing Kayaks Big Rush K2.<\/p>\n

On the day before the race visitors to the area tripping the river will be offered a chance to shoot the big Keith\u2019s Flyover rapid in a tough Epic V7 sit-on-top kayak at R20 a go, with all the funds raised going to the Cradock Cancer Care Unit fundraiser, and each participating paddler goes into a draw to win the boat at prize giving.<\/p>\n

Similarly Go Karoo Adventures will be offering inflatable croc trips down Soutpansdrift rapid for a small fee to add further cash to the fundraiser.<\/p>\n

Paddlers are also able to purchase a spot in the Charity Batch for R1000 each to bolster the funds accumulated for the project.<\/p>\n

The Cradock Cancer Care unit services a wide cross section of communities in the greater Klein Karoo area, offering cancer treatments on site, and where necessary, transport to Port Elizabeth for any specialised cancer treatment not available in Cradock.<\/p>\n

\u201cCancer affects all of us at some stage or other,\u201d said race committee chairman Pieter Marais. \u201cThe needs of cancer sufferers in this community vary enormously.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome need very expensive treatment that they just can\u2019t afford. For others it is more about nutrition. And in many cases it is caring and counselling that counts the most.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis weekend we have a chance as paddlers who come to Cradock to make a statement and show support for this very important facility that wages the war against cancer year-round.<\/p>\n
